5 Garden Plants To Transform Your Home.jpg

There's absolutely nothing more transformative than greenery in a home. Even fake green plants attempt to add some level of green vibe to both indoors and outdoors environments. But they can't get it right like these outdoor plants which you must absolutely fit in your budget for your home. Garden plants add on volume, rich texture and colour to your garden area making them perfect for instagram-worthy selfie backgrounds and quiet reading moments.

Dieffenbachia

Also known as Elephant Ears or Dumb Cane is a perfect addition to your garden whether its potted or planted directly in the soil. If you have children, it's best to keep this plant far from them as it's poisonous when ingested. Best planted in the corner of the garden to add chic texture to the wall.

Bougainvillea

A very popular plant seen around many houses in the city, growing lush over walls, spilling glorious never-ending colour everywhere. Bougainvillea is not only an ideal garden plant because of its beauty, but it's also drought tolerant which means less watering. The plant comes in different colours; red, white, orange and purple. Choose one which either contrasts or complements nicely with your exterior house colour.

Yucca Flaccida 'Golden Sword'

Seen this 'flaming' plants around? The dramatic sword shaped leaves are hard to avoid and will pull every eye into your garden. It grows pretty high and has tiny thorns on the leaf edges. It's also very easy to grow and drought tolerant.

Ferns

Ferns are actually quite common in Ghana and finding a fern is as easy as stopping by the garden street vendors and grabbing a couple for your garden. If you are familiar with the East Legon Tunnel, you definitely haven't missed seeing several potted plants and garden rocks as you drive towards Starbites. Ask for Boston ferns if you want to plant the ferns in a pot which will be placed on the garden wall. When taken care of, Boston ferns will make your house look like a million dollars.

Cactus

Who'd ever think cactuses would be such an instagram-worthy, pinterest-divine item? Almost every blogger is taking photos with dear prickly cactus.

Cacti or Cactuses have been around for ages and have been ignored for far too long! It's time for Amodi ( Ga word for Cactus) to rise up to it's rightful place as king of the garden! But watch out for those thorns though! There are many varieties of cacti and to add magnificence and texure to your garden, find the variety which grows ( a very slow growth) to have majestic almost 7 ft high stalks. It's very drought tolerant needing to be water once every two to three weeks. If you have bought a land and have plans to start building this year, strategically plant your cacti so by the time you are done building (2-5years) it will a majestic and fully-grown cactus.

How I Cooked Jollof Using A Traditional Clay Pot

There used to be a giant clay pot sitting squat in a corner of the corridor which led to the kitchen.  A plate serving as a lid covered it's wide gaping mouth whilst a plastic cup sat atop the plate. The clay pot was used to hold drinking water and I can remember it ever so vividly the number of times I would reach for the cup, extend a hand into the pot to bring up fresh water to quench my thirst. And most of all, I can remember the taste of the water sloshing down my throat. That earthy flavour of burnt clay intermingled with the water is one you can't forget after one experience.

So I cooked Jollof in an unglazed clay pot the other day and invited a couple of friends over for a taste experience. Thanks to Lydia Forson's Instagram post which featured Abe nkwan boiling and roiling in clay pots over gas; my curiosity was highly piqued. How have I never thought of this? 😅

In many rural areas in Ghana, the traditional unglazed clay pots serve as a cooking utensil which is placed between triangular mounds of clay ( what we call Laat3 in Ga) with smouldering firewood coals as a heat source. It's an ancient utensil which is still in use today.  Clay pots are made from the very common earthenware clay due to it's high plasticity. There's always such a distinctive taste difference between foods prepared in traditional utensils & modern metallic saucepans, I am sure you agree 100% :D.

Before using the clay pot, always bake it or season it first or else you will end up with a mouldy clay pot afterwards. To bake it in, first wash the entire pot (inside and out) with running water, then fill it with water almost to the brim and set it on the gas stove for 20-25 minutes over low heat. Pour out the water and use as normal. Seasoning the pot in this manner, releases moisture into the food as you cook which means you need less liquid to cook.

I cooked the Jollof the same way I would using a modern saucepan. One thing I noticed is how the pot eases in the heat slowly so it took time for the oil to heat up and for most of the ingredients to also cook through. Be patient with the pot.

I also didn't have to constantly be checking and stirring as you would using metallic saucepans. One thing I discovered was that the clay pot was also naturally non-stick! The tomato sauce wasn't sticking to the bottom of the pot at all.

FullSizeRender.jpg

The fragrance from the pot was divine! All the earthy flavour of the pot combined with the cooking vegetables erupted and flooded my kitchen the whole evening. It was an aroma similar to when pizza is being baked in a wood-fired oven. Tres naturelle. Clay is naturally porous which allows moisture and heat to circulate during the cooking process. That's the magic.

The tomato sauce was just perfectly cooked and had a less acidic flavour thanks to the alkalinity of clay which reduced the acidity. I also used chicken stock instead of water to cook the tomatoes which made the tomatoes more flavourful.

It's much easier to navigate through the pot using a traditional wooden spoon ( Banku stick/Gigintso) as compared to using a plastic spoon.

FullSizeRender.jpg

The Jollof was done in 45 minutes. To further retain moisture I covered the rice with aluminium foil and a lid. Weirdly I didn't see a clay pot lid during my purchase so I used glass lid with a mini steam opening.

Dinner was ready!

FullSizeRender.jpg

"It tastes like party Jollof,"one of our dinner guests remarked. He was right. It tasted just like the Jollof served at family parties. It was so earthy and such an enhancement of flavour in the meal. An authentic taste which you can't get from today's metallic saucepans. Nope.

It went excellently with the quail, shallow-fried kelewele and green salad.

FullSizeRender.jpg

I heated up the Jollof for some minutes in the pot. The next day it was still in excellent condition and best of all? The Kanzo was on point! Like so much tastier  😍😻.

This clay pot is going to be a fixed item in my kitchen, it's not going anywhere anytime soon 😁. Isn't it incredible that the clay pot design has remained unchanging over the years? The pottery industry in Ghana needs more innovation to upgrade the clay pot design to something easier to handle ( like can we get handles ?) .  Cooking in a clay pot is also such a healthier choice as clay contains iron and other minerals. Are you a slow cooker user? Then consider using a traditional clay pot, moisture and nutrients retained for days!

By the way have you used a clay pot to cook before? I would love to know what it felt like using such an ancient yet amazing utensil. How did your food turn out? Do share in the comments section.

About two weeks ago, I received an email from YouTube to take me off their monetization plan as a YouTube Partner because I didn't have 1000 subscribers. Saying I was crushed doesn't even cut it. I mean, I was devastated! Creating content under slow internet conditions is not the easiest of tasks but some of us have prevailed through the years.

Now we all know YouTube did this to us small channels who are creating highly engaging and useful content so that they can focus on the bigger channels. Why didn't YouTube identify the impersonators, abusers and scammers and ban them instead of collating all of us into one big heap? No words right now.

I need your help to drive up my subscription numbers to a 1000 before February 20. I am currently at 531. I know many of you ( especially you reading this) have benefitted from my blog content over the years and I haven't asked for anything back. Isn't it time you showed me some free love back by subscribing and sharing this post as wide as you can? Yes, it's your time.

Bullet Ruff N Smooth Responds To The Appalling Reactions of Ghanaians After Ebony's Passing

Ebony's tragic death this Thursday 8th February, 2018 has ripped many hearts apart. Mine not excluded. I wasn't a fan but I admired her tenacity and boldness to create her own magic in the Ghanaian music space. That space is not for the timid and she made huge colossal strides in such a short time.

Source: Urban Islandz

Source: Urban Islandz

It was the first thing I saw Friday morning whilst scrolling through my Twitter timeline. I wasn't even sure if it was the same person as I didnt know Reigns was part of her stage name. So i double-checked on CitiFm's account to see the verified confirmation. Utterly shell-shocked! Like how? But there it was, a horrid car accident killing three people instantly and how the driver escaped unhurt is totally beyond me.

But as the morning wore on, it was even more grievous, shocking and appalling to see Ghanaians sharing photos of the dead musician, her friend and another man. How debased and how low have we stooped in our search for information? Have we no regard for empathy and compassion for the family and friends of the departed?

Then my husband sends me a tweet of a prophet who prophesied of her impending death this year. My mind was in a confused whirl of emotions. Did the prophet warn Ebony of his revelation? I had no information on that. But as the day waned on many Ghanaians on Twitter and Facebook started speculating, accusing, condemning and offering  philosophical advice regarding the death of Ebony.

Finally, this morning the manager of Ebony released this statement on his Facebook page putting to rest or rather shutting the mouths of konkonsa people questioning her salvation status. His post; screen grabs of their Ebony Management Whatsapp Group and actions they were taking regarding the prophecy of her death.

So not only were her management team aware of the prophecies but they had taken some actions to prevent it from happening. A photo of Dr. Lawerence Tetteh & Ebony followed by a tweet by JoyFm shows that she had consulted him, was it on the prophecy, possibly.

Yes prophecies can be declared and it can be reversed, go check with King Hezekiah who received a prophecy of his impending death when he got ill. Did he not prayer and got a guaranteed 15 years life extension? So why didn't it work in this case? Are you God? Who are you to question what is permitted?

The venom, criticisms being posted online by people is simple sign of immaturity and lack of thought to honor those who are bereaved. Pulse Ghana posting a video of her mourning Mom was another such example. We seem to take cruel joy at sharing photos of mangled bodies involved in either car accidents, murder at the hands of armed robbers, atrocities committed wives, husbands etc. What wickedness has penetrated the hearts of Ghanaians in this age of social media?

Bloggers who rush to get photos of the dead to post on 'blog's' just to get traffic are one of the categories of people I don't get. Are you even a blogger? Do you understand who a blogger is? Or you are in it just to make money because you can't seem to find or are too lazy to discover your real talent? Tasteless articles and click-bait headlines with no quality content.

Why have we sunk so low? Even Christians who should be more focused on their salvation are rather judging a departed soul. Are you guys okay? Instead of focusing on discovering our purpose we are hell-bent on being judges hitting our gavels declaring judgement on how others live their lives.

Ebony was obviously a bold woman who lived her life with lots of laughter.

She might have had her weakness like you and I but she was living her dream. Are you living yours whilst you still have life? Think Hard!

Rest Strong Ebony!.

Polositas Steak & Grill House: " Some pretty generous grills with some rather interesting double takes." - restaurant review.

The current spot occupied by Polositas used to be an art gallery & photography studio. I remember it so well because I took my first professional portrait there as well as a few with my ex. The studio didn't last like my ex. But lo & behold, a brand new restaurant has replaced it and it's standing fresh and proud amidst the busyness of human life walking to & fro at Danquah Circle.

Polositas, is easy to spot in its grey exterior highlighted with red details and a little on your left just before Glory Oil and a few seconds from Danquah Circle heading towards Labadi.

IMG_2675-1.JPG

I was joined for lunch by a fellow blogger who couldn't wait to sate his hunger. Opening at 12:30pm, the restaurant which opened in December 2017 was quiet with no rush lunch diners.

On entering Polositas, one gets the impression of being in a fast food restaurant which is exactly what is served for hungry diners looking to grab n go. A few tables for the most impatient of diners are positioned before the order counter.   Since we were very patient diners we headed upstairs.

A polo game giving a sports vibe

I love eating outside on sunny days whilst lounging on cloud-soft pillows and we eagerly went outside only for the gutsy wind eagerly blow some speck of dust in my eye. Indoor it is then. A simple and minimalistic interior gives the top part of the restaurant a smart casual dining appeal with a well-stocked bar close to the stairs.

My long-island tea although not what I expected reminded me of having a Chapman drink. Unlike some restaurant menus which can leave bird seed on your brain with an over-the-top menu, Polositas has a simple food menu with lots of choice grills.

IMG_2667-1.JPG IMG_2650.JPG

My buddy went full on with the pork pieces ( domedo) as a starter which were lean and apparently smoked. Smoked pork should be a thing by now. Who cares about how long it cooks?!? Herby and quite tasty it was and a must-try. Chewy and more floury samosas often found me grabbing more for the domedo.

IMG_2656.JPG

There are very few continental restaurants in the city not listing Jollof on their menu. Many at times, I have had friends who would choose Jollof after several glances through a menu. Jollof never fails they would say. This Jollof which my buddy chose was not a failure neither was it a success. Single grains, perfect golden orangey colour but a tad too bland for the ordinary Ghanaian who loves their spice.

IMG_2663.JPG

The almighty chukkers box was beyond my expectations and is a much recommended choice for larger groups of three or four. Grilled sausages, pork and lamb chops darkly glisten beneath the warmth of the indoor lighting. I was better off jumping into this meat pool with my two hands instead of the savage fork and knife. The lamb was tasty but more medium-rare than well done, sometimes I do medium-rare and other times well done with more moisture than dryness.

Lamb & Pork Chops

Lamb & Pork Chops

I was too stuffed for dessert but my next visit will see me ordering some slices of pound cake with a steaming espresso.

Just before we left, we discovered - hidden away in another corner of the ground floor- a kiddie space for feisty kids who want to squeal and jump around. Parents can have some us-time whilst the kids scream away their joy.

Polosita's is great for large groups, private parties and the ilk. Large screens will make the day of any Manchester United fan as they chow down on steaks and chilled cocktails.

For a couple, best to budget GHC 150-200 if going out with your belle this Valentines Day, the patio is the perfect setting over a meal whilst enjoying the warm Accra breeze.

Up Close & Personal Interview With Mr. Michael Oti Adjei, Newly Appointed GM, Digital at Media General.

Sports journalism in Ghana has been graced with some pretty amazing journalists over the past five decades from “ Over to You” Joe Lartey, the riveting Kwabena Yeboah and the enigmatic broadcaster Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah, to the late Christopher Opoku, Lawyer Eva Otchere ( a former sports journalist at JoyFm) , Nathan Quao (Sports Presenter& Journalist at CitiFm) , Gary Al-Smith (Sports Journalist & Presenter at JoyFm) and Michael Oti-Adjei (ex-Group Head, Sports at TV3, Sports Writer). Great personalities who have brought a wide range of local and international sports commentary and content to digital and traditional media platforms in Ghana.

So very often we see sports journalists on our screens covering sporting events in various countries and it seems so exciting and inspirational especially for those who want to pursue a career in sports journalism.

Earlier this weekend, I e-interviewed the newly appointed General Manager, Digital at Media General Mr. Michael Oti-Adjei to share his life and career journey as a sports journalist, ex-Group Head, Sports up until his newest appointment. Be inspired!.

Naa: Tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up and how were you as a child?

Mr. Oti-Adjei: I grew up in Accra New Town and spent a significant part of my pre teen years doing everything a child would do. Learning to ride a bike to the anger of parents because streets were too narrow and dangerous, playing tennis, football regularly and that sort of thing. I also did a lot of reading as a child because an enforced spell at home got my mum to buy me books in order to keep me busy and that triggered significant interest so I begun the regular journey to the library in Accra central. I was in shift school so I would spend the time reading before my afternoon shift or go after the morning shift and head home with my mum who sold at makola. New Town also bad a lot newspaper stalls and that helped.

Naa: When did you decide to pursue a career in sports?

Mr. Oti-Adjei: I think mine was more a career in journalism more than sports even though at a point I deviated. I studied science in Pope John Secondary School but the more I spent time in the school library reading newspapers, watching football shows on Monday and football tournaments, the more I became convinced I wanted to be involved in the media side of sports. By the time I completed my SSS program I knew exactly what I wanted and it was to study and practice journalism so I enrolled at GIJ seven months afterwards and was lucky to make it though a strenuous selection process at the first attempt

Naa: How did your parents / family take to your career choice?

Mr. Oti-Adjei: Very supportive. My father gave me all the support and assistance he could find in my bid to get into GIJ: past questions for the entrance exams, finding me someone to help me understanding the issues. It was important because as I discovered later in journalism sch, making that choice was not always a popular one in many households. My friend's dad actually told me it was for people who had failed in secondary school but my parents happily backed me and that was important.

In Daegu, South Korea covering the 2011 World Athletics Championship for the BBC

Naa: Who was your favorite Athlete in the 90's and why?

Mr. Oti Adjei: Abedi Pele because he was a Ghanaian doing amazing things in the 90s...multiple Africa player of the year titles and playing and beating some of the best players in the world. I liked Tony Yeboah too a lot because the TV program Football Made in Germany opened my eyes to his exploits in Germany way before he became such a hit in England. I liked Michael Jordan for obvious reasons but was also always fascinated by Scotti Pippen and have always thought the sprinter Carl Lewis is ultra special

Naa: What's your favourite sports movie of all time ?

Mr. Oti Adjei: Invictus. The story of South Africa's 1995 rugby world cup victory in which Morgan Freeman plays Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon is Francois Pinnear. I like it because it provides amazing insight into the power of sports in a way that we far too often ignore

Naa: How have you used social media to tell sports stories?

Mr. Oti Adjei : It's been two fold. It's given me a private channel which means I can put out information, run commentary on the biggest sporting events and any issues I feel free too. In that sense it's been immense in enhancing my reputation as a sports journalist. It's also been a huge amplifier of my works. So whether I am writing for a website, magazine or producing content for TV it's helped me reach new audiences in a unique way.

Naa: When did you first present on a TV Sports program? How did you feel?

Mr. Oti Adjei: My first appearance was as a guest in the build up to a Black Stars match with Carl Tuffour. It was difficult and I was shy half the time. TV presentation was not part of my plan. I was nuts about writing, providing context and background but the more I did those well, the more there was a sense that I could make the transition so I embraced it.

Naa: Who's your favourite sports broadcaster in Ghana? What about the world? What is it about them that inspires you?

Mr. Oti Adjei: Easy. Kwabena Yeboah. The longetivity has been amazing but also the amount of work he continues to put in. Been lucky to be exposed to how he works. Top man.

I am also a big fan of Robert Marawa because he has amazing control over his programs and crucially for a broadcaster, finds a very good balance between allowing his guests to freely express themselves while still being able to impose his personality. Another top, top guy.

Naa: What tips can you share about how to conduct a live interview on TV?

Mr. Oti Adjei: My rule is simple: prepare very well and remember the interview is never about you so don't like the sound of your voice more than the guest. And listen well. The best questions come from good preparation and an ability to listen well. With those two, you would always thrive. Even if the interview is unplanned, you should have a body of knowledge from a good reading habbit that would serve you well. That's why reading is non negotiable for anyone wanting to be in this business

Naa: How do you handle social media trolls in your line of work?

Mr. Oti Adjei: Sometimes I ignore, sometimes I respond. Mostly it gets tiring. But every day I become better at dealing with it by simply ignoring. I think the easiest way to deal with it is to understand that it will always be there. You just have to get on with them.

Naa: What is/are the key(s) to success as a sports writer?

Mr. Oti Adjei: It's to be passionate about sports. I know we use the term passionate a lot in life but to be good at sports writing and broadcasting, you really need to be because it demands full attention. You just can't do it if you are not a big sports fan.

Naa: In your opinion how will the Corona virus change / impact the world of sports when restrictions are eased up ?

Mr. Oti Adjei: We are already seeing a few signs...no fans in the stadium a big part of that. I think the biggest impcat though is that it will make television and digital platforms even more powerful tools in sports broadcasting. As more and more people dread big crowds, these channels will become even more important in having to inform, create context and convey the emotions from venues. There are great opportunities in them for everyone involved in the space.

Stop Allowing New Dads To Jump The 'Weighing' Queue.

$

I recently took my one year old for post-natal care what we call ‘weighing’ in Ghana. Due to the novel coronavirus, the previous hospital (Ghana-Canada Hospital ) closed the existing space for postnatal care and we were directed to Adjirigano Health Center for weighing and immunizations. This was my first time at this health center and on getting there I was truly disappointed. The state of the government health center was woeful and stood out in stark contrast to the prestigious residences of Adjirigano. This is a conversation for another day.

We were the third to arrive at the health center for weighing. We sat outside in the morning sun with social distancing measures in place, awaiting the nurses to start the process. A new Dad arrived some minutes after we did holding a baby girl of about 8 months, he sat a few feet away from us. I was actually delighted to see a man at weighing. It’s not a common sight. Sadly, my husband isn’t in the country to accompany me for weighing but I encouraged him several times and even when work kept him away he enquired of the process and stayed up to date with her growth and shots.

Finally a nurse arrived and she immediately began sharing information about the weighing process; in Twi. I tried to listen. She asked the mothers present not to get upset when they allow new moms with newborns to ‘jump’ the queue and she explained also that the Ghana Health Service is trying to encourage more new Dads to be part of postnatal activities that’s why there were men present and somewhere along those lines the Twi did me a number and I got lost in translation. It was only much later when we got home that my baby’s Nanny told me that the Nurse also mentioned that we should allow the men to jump the queue because they (the Dads) weren’t used to being present at weighing and being in such an environment. What??? Why??

Why should men be allowed to jump a queue during weighing? Why should we reward men for being part of a natural childcare process like weighing and immunization? Weren’t they part of the conception in the first place? So why treat them different and ‘special’ ? Postnatal isn’t a whole day’s activity and any new Dad should be able to make the time to know what it entails and the immunization shots their babies need in the event of any emergency. This isn’t the sole responsibility of mothers. I am sorry but no.

This directive issued for maternal centers is wrong and must be revoked asap! Let men be in the queue with the mothers. They will not die holding a crying baby! Neither will they be less of men if they change a soiled diaper whilst in the queue. If you are a new mother who has been going for weighing and you ever hear such a comment from any of the nurses please speak up! Let them know that it’s wrong for the men to jump the queue. We are all breaking our backs to take care of our children. Let them wait!

Too many men have grown up in homes where the mother is seen to do everything and knows everything regarding the children. It’s always Mother who knows the children’s class teacher’s name, the children’s date and place of birth, the children’s blood group, the child’s diet or their favorite games or toys. Ask the Father the same questions and he falls short.

This social norm of only mothers going for weighing must be broken, unlearned and relearned where the new normal is for new fathers to accompany their children’s mother  to understand the procedure and then go by himself with the baby especially after the first 6 weeks of crucial immunization shots.

African parents, please help change the social narrative by encouraging and educating your  sons not to be socially distant with regards to maternal health and childcare matters. It doesn’t take anything away from your sons to go for weighing with their wives or child’s mother. They will be strong men not weak men as you think.

As a new Dad, helping out does so much for your baby’s mother mental health. You have no idea. Instead of making excuses and hiding from diaper changes, feeding time, burping time, bathing time, diaper changes and more diaper changes, choose to be more involved in raising your child. Even if she’s your baby mama, show some interest. Ask questions, be present. It’s a beautiful thing to see more men showing up for postnatal because for too long have men been in the shadows and absentia when a newborn arrives. Showing up and not ‘hiding’ behind ‘I’m busy or I have a meeting.’ We are also busy and cracking our backs with Motherhood too, helloo?? This new phase of life is learnt and loved with all it’s upsides and downsides. It’s no wonder Father’s Day isn’t celebrated as much as Mother’s Day.

zach-vessels-0mRerwRVqVA-unsplash.jpg

A friend once told me that, ‘ chale just see it as it’s just you and the baby for one year. The men won’t be there like you want them to. So it’s best you take care of your child by yourself for your own peace of mind.’  Sadly, that’s the reality of most moms but should it be so? Should we have zero expectations as new moms?

Pregnancy and childcare isn’t a mother’s sole responsibility. It didn’t take only a woman’s egg to create the new life which is birthed after 9months (ceteris paribus). It takes both a mother and a father to produce that life and once that life breathes and cries for the first time it’s both of them who must learn the ropes of being new parents.

Amazing Uses of Shea Butter During, After Pregnancy & For Baby.

$

The amazing uses of Shea Butter just keeps growing and surpassing it’s previous use for our natural hair and combatting the dryness of harmattan. Shea Butter is now an everyday lifestyle product to have at home for varied uses.

Shea butter is fat extracted from the shea tree which grows in abundance in Northern Ghana and several African countries as well. It’s not only popularly used in cosmetics but is also a key ingredient in the confectionery industry. Did you know you can replace other vegetable oils with Shea Butter? Absolutely!

I recently discovered how more awesome this natural God-given yellow gold is especially during my pregnancy and postnatal period. Just have a read and see for yourself.

  1. Reduce Pregnancy Belly Itching

Rub a teaspoonful of shea butter on your baby bump to reduce the itchiness which come the stretching of your skin as your baby grows. You will get an incredible relief from the creaminess and magic of shea.

shea butter

2. Have Sore Feet?

Soak your achy or swollen feet in warm water for 5 minutes and let hubby rub and massage shea butter all over your feet to the ankles. You will feel so much more relaxed.

3. Reduce Achy Back Pains

Back pains during pregnancy are simply intolerable and as the months wear on and baby gets bigger, moving around is so tough. Melt down some shea butter into the oil stage and allow to cool, add a three drops of peppermint and lavender essential oil and mix thoroughly. Call hubby to give you a good massage with the shea oil just before you go to bed. You are assured of better sleep and a less achy back. Baby will happy as well unless he’s a kicker at night. 😅

4. Relieve The Pain of Breast Engorgement.

Breast engorgement is not only uncomfortable but also painful and can easily lead to mastitis if left untreated. Engorgement happens when you don’t pump out milk enough or allow baby to suckle enough times. Your breasts becomes firm, swollen and painful to the touch. To relieve the pain of engorgement; drop a face towel in hot water , wring it out and apply to your breasts in a massaging circular movement. Apply shea butter after 5 minutes and continue massaging. This will relax the breast muscles and milk-carrying veins and make it easier for you to express and less painful when baby suckles.

5. Ease & Relieve Baby’s Constipation.

A constipated baby is not a happy baby. An unhappy baby means a worried-to-death mommy. Baby can be constipated for so many reasons and especially when you get him started on first solids. It’s such a trying phase for many new moms. Apply Shea Butter to baby’s bum and rub several times when baby is unable to bring out the poop. Keep rubbing it on the bum cheeks and around the anal sphincter in a firm but gentle motion (but do not insert finger). It works wonders! My baby’s Nanny did this one time and once the muscles relaxed, the poop came out. She slept so deeply that afternoon.

6. Baby Hair & Skin Care

Shea Butter is a natural skin emollient for both Mom and baby. Apply shea to baby’s skin immediately after a bath to trap in the moisture leading to beautiful skin smoothness. Avoid adding essential oils to a newborn baby’s skin as this can cause allergies and other severe skin reactions. A few drops when baby is a year old is much safer. Do same for yourself as a mommy especially after a long diaper day.

7. Prevent Diaper Rashes

There are many diaper rash creams on supermarket shelves but the ultimate one is pure raw shea butter which most of these creams are made from anyway. Save money and use natural shea butter before putting baby in diapers and after each diaper change. Your baby will forever have that perfect baby bum smoothness.

How else are you using Shea Butter for you and baby? Do share in the comments section and let’s revel in the goodness of our natural resources. Stay safe and always wear a nose mask!

7 Tips On How To Use Uber Connect For Fast & Safe Food Delivery.

Covid-19 has truly transformed the way of work in Ghana in diverse ways. The pandemic forced the hand of most management boards to implement remote work strategies for their staff and this has certainly been a rough adopt-or-die phase. Businesses are now ‘forced’ to rethink of how to implement e-commerce as part of their digital marketing efforts in a bid to increase sales revenue which drastically reduced during the lockdown period. The most active type of business during the lockdown was perhaps delivery services within the city. The Presidential directive to #StayHome brought on an increase in online buying by consumers thus boosting delivery services. No wonder Uber integrated a new feature in their mobile app and named it Uber Connect. A feature whereby the user orders an Uber to pick up packages to be delivered to them or businesses orders a ride for delivery of products to customers.

As a restaurant, we have used Uber Connect for the past month and half due to the increase in digital ordering of food and unlike the use of dispatch motorbike riders, the food has always been delivered safely and without incident. Well, no complaints received so far.

It took some getting used to though but it has been a great learning experience so far and has firmly been integrated as a key direct-distribution channel for the restaurant.

Here are some of my tips on how to use Uber Connect more effectively to ensure a smoother food delivery experience for your customers. I am going to assume you already have the app and are conversant with ordering a ride.

Why We Use Uber Connect For Food Delivery.

      A more secure  delivery.

Customers expect their delivered meals in a presentable state as much as possible. Sometimes this can be difficult depending on what kind of meal they order, for example soups. As a restaurant, you must ensure to have safe food packaging for delivery to prevent food spillages en route to customers. However, the transportation of food orders must also be conducted safely in addition to the packaging. Some food dispatch riders ride as though being chased by Tokyo ghouls and by the time customers get their food, the meal resembles moon craters or something thrown out into the bin. The best of packaging coupled with an Uber Connect delivery will protect your meal plating presentation to customers. No oil-stained packaging or tossed around meals either.  Well.. that is if the Uber driver isn’t a Formula-One wannabe.

These tips will definitely ensure happy loyal customers  and definitely less stress for you as a business owner.

1.     Always Have Your Package Ready.

Ensure your meal packages are all packed up, labelled and ready to be picked up before you call for a driver. Some drivers get impatient and change the trip if you make them wait for more than 5 minutes. Provide the driver with food handling safety information such as to drive cautiously because of soups in the containers or position the meals safely on the seats or wherever is most suitable.

2.     Double-check the delivery fee with the customer

Depending on your restaurant / home kitchen location and your customer’s location, Uber Connect can be slightly cheaper than using a courier service. The app shares a price estimate on delivery of package after you input the location. Always confirm this amount with the customer if they are willing to accept the charges or if they prefer a 3rd party at a cheaper rate which might be late in arriving. Some customers don’t mind pay a little extra for convenience and having to avoid directing the ‘ Ghanaian way’ i.e  ( if you see the brown container turn left, turn right at the plantain sellers place.. )

3.     Digital payment

Due to covid-19, digital payment has become the most acceptable form of payment for goods and services. Uber drivers in Ghana don’t comply with accepting VISA payments on the app and would choose not to accept any ride where the customer is paying digitally. Because the customer pays for the delivery and not we the restaurant, we choose CASH as the mode of payment on arrival. Often times where a customer adds the delivery fee to their meal, we would pay the driver via his MOMO. This has worked well so far.

4.     Communicate customer contact details.

Send ahead the customer’s contact details in the chat field once a driver has been identified and notified. This prevents a delay in delivery for the customer as the driver can call the customer directly to inform them on delivery status or further directions.

5.     Require Specific Landmarks, Street Names or Locating Share

The Ghana GPS is yet to be rolled out across the city and the country so usually asking customers to provide their GPS code is never enough. Often times, customers may say “ Labadi” is their location but hey Labadi is massive so to prevent a further delay, ask customers to provide the closest landmark to their location and input that in the Uber app. Street names also works pretty well in the app, so you can request that information if it’s available. Some customers share their location link if you’re communicating with them on a messenger service like Whatsapp. Copying and pasting that into the app sometimes works and other times doesn’t quite. Try all three and see which works for you.

6.     Share Driver Location

The ability to share the driver’s location en route to customer is a personal favorite and one you should do once the package has been picked up. Click on the Share button once the ride is live and choose the whatsapp app to share the link with the customer. You can edit the messaging accompanying the link with your brand messaging.  You can also just copy the link and paste in any other messaging platform you may be using. By doing this, customers get informed early and expectant of their meal, you also don’t get bombarded with ‘ where’s my food” questions on whatsapp.

7. Comply with covid-safety measures.

Ensure your staff are in their nose masks when presenting the packages to the riders. They should wash their hands with soap under running water afterwards as well

Our Struggle

Our current struggle with Uber Connect is when lots of orders comes in and the inability to call for several rides using the same app. We have to wait for one delivery to be completed first before we can call another one.

The Solution.

Our solution has been to work with a third-party delivery service in addition to using the Uber Connect to ensure customers get their meals on time. We also have about three smartphones owned by staff which we use in addition when one phone is occupied with a ride. Wild eh! This strategy has worked excellently in our favour.

Uber Connect may not be as fast as a dispatch 🏍 service but it definitely delivers on convenience, food safety and security value to your customers.

Are you using Uber Connect as part of your 3rd party delivery services? How has been your experience so far? Impressed or nah? Do share in the comments section 👍🏾

I used to hate the early morning ‘teeshi’ wakeup call from my Grandma on Homowo day. Why did we have to wake up with the cockerels at 4am? It was only much later in my slightly adult-years did I realise why before I stopped my grumbling. If you don’t start early, the kpokpoi will not be ready by lunch time and hungry relatives will be trooping into the kitchen to peek into the palm-nut soup cauldron whilst exclaiming, ‘ niyeni be ko lo?’ Kpokpoi is delicious and even more delicious the next day when it’s dry toasted.

Just like that and another Homowo festival season is here. The Ga Mashie Homowo although celebrated was slightly minimised on celebrations due to the covid-19 pandemic. Last year’s festival was super lit and exciting during the #EatingAccraHomowo food tour through Jamestown.

#EatingAccraHomowo

We experienced how kpokpoi is prepared from when the corn is freshly milled, steamed and then to the final sharing, plating and dining. Good times.

IMG_1937 2.jpg

Read more about the history of Ga Homowo and why Kpokpoi is prepared and sprinkled here.

I had hoped to share a video recipe but early motherhood :D so here’s my recipe on how to cook kpokpoi / kpekple .

The preparation of Kpokpoi although lengthy because of the quantities prepared is actually very easy and you can easily cook it at home. If you are abroad and living in a remote part of the UK or USA where the nearest Ga relative or friends is possibly hundreds of miles away, then you should read on and definitely try this at home.

Traditional kitchen appliances used during the preparation of Kpokpoi are the wooden mortar and pestle for pounding the steamed corn, dads3n (metal cauldron), about a yard of ‘mosquito’ net, clay pot steamer and the wooden sieve. If you don’t have these at home you can substitute the clay pot steamer with your rice cooker, the net with a cheesecloth and the wooden sieve with a rectangular metal sieve.

Traditional Clay Steamer

Traditional Clay Steamer

The ingredients for making Kpokpoi are simple and few; ground corn/maize, palm-oil, onions, salt and in some Ga houses there’s the inclusion of okra which is optional.

Preparing Okro for Kpokpoi

Preparing Okro for Kpokpoi

Preparing the corn

Let’s start first with how the corn is prepped and the quantity you need. If you are preparing a meal for a family of 3 or 4 individuals then half-olonka is sufficient. Half-olonka is roughly about 6 cups of corn. If you can’t send the corn to the mill like we do in Ghana, then you can try using cornmeal but I have never used cornmeal in preparing Kpokpoi before as cornmeal is purely dried milled corn. The difference is that Kpokpoi corn is soaked overnight for hydrating the corn. Perhaps masa corn will do? So back to preparing the corn. Wash it to get rid of impurities about 4-5 times until the water becomes clear. Fill the container until water covers the top of the grains. The next morning, pour out the water and have it sent to the mill in your neighbourhood. It’s such a blessing to have a local mill in your area, eh! Even if it’s 5km away like mine is. Once it’s milled you have to use it immediately to prevent fermentation. Some people sieve the milled corn, others go straight ahead to the steaming process.

Steaming the corn

Once your corn is milled, it’s time to steam it. Like I said earlier, you can absolutely use a rice cooker to steam your milled corn using the steamer basket which comes with your rice cooker. Hopefully you haven’t disposed of it. hehe! It’s such a useful part of the rice cooker for steaming vegetables, fish and dumplings.

Fill the rice cooker with water to about half-way and place the steamer basket above it, spread your cheesecloth/ mosquito net into the basket and pour the milled corn into the basket to cover every corner and space. Cover the top part with the lose ends of the net or cloth. Flip the switch on the rice cooker to COOK. How to tell if it’s steaming? The signs of rising steam is your evidence. Allow to cook for 10mins.

Preparing the PalmOil

Palm oil renders the yellowish-orangish color to Kpokpoi and we flavour it with onions, shrimp or dried fish. Go with whichever you have available. Chop up one onion. Heat about 1 cup of palm oil in a small saucepan and add onions, allow onions to caramelise to flavour the oil. Set aside. Also add about 1 teaspoon of salt to 1/2 cup of water to make salted water which will be sprinkled onto the steam corn before pounding.

Pounding the Kpokpoi

Check on the steaming corn. The corn should have a cooked and slightly thickened texture. Once you see this, pour out into your mortar, add the salted water by sprinkling a few teaspoons at a time. Sprinkle the palm oil onto the corn and start pounding. The amount of palm oil will depend on how you like your Kpokpoi to look. You can also add the palm oil which rises from the palm-nut soup as your colorant. This renders a stronger flavour as well. In the event that you don’t have a mortar, trust me on this, use an asanka bowl and the tapoli. This works only if you are preparing a meal just for yourself or else you will get tired soon. Pound the palmy cornmeal until the oil is well-incorporated into the corn. It takes less than 5mins to pound if it’s not much corn. Pour out into a bowl.

Traditional pounding of Kpokpoi

Traditional pounding of Kpokpoi

You can choose to add cooked and chopped okra at this stage as a thickener but it’s very optional.

Sieve the pounded kpokpoi using the wooden sieve or a rectangular metal sieve if you can find one. Sieving the Kpokpoi makes it finer and separates the rough clumps from the others. The clumps can also be pounded again and further sieving done to extract more finer grains.

That’s it! Dig in with your already cooked palm-nut soup. But don’t forget to leave some to dry toast the next day. That’s the best one isn’t it?

Even if you don’t cook this at home, I hope you have picked some insights into the the preparation of Kpokpoi. Stay safe guys!

Extended Breastfeeding. What To Expect & The Benefits.

Processed with VSCO with aga2 preset

I had planned to stop breastfeeding and wean baby off the breast when she got to 1. Well, a year and almost half months down the line we are still on it. Ei! This world 😅. So it looks like we are going the full mile towards 2years before the boob gates are finally closed and kept under lock and key.

According to WHO, it is recommended that “ From the age of 6 months, children should begin eating safe and adequate complementary foods while continuing to breastfeed for up to 2 years and beyond.” Extended breastfeeding with this recommendation in mind is basically continued breastfeeding with complementary foods for your little one after their first birthday and beyond.

So how’s it like?

Breastfeeding in itself is exhausting, draining, painful ( every baby has invisible baby shark gums) and hungry work especially in the first exclusive 6 months period. Initially, I had planned to do exclusive breastfeeding but the flow wasn’t as strong so I supplemented with Nan1 formula until she was about 3 months when she rejected any form of milk in a bottle. Not even freshly, divine, delicious expressed mama’s milk in a bottle! Thankfully, my flow started increasing and soon it was almost 6 months when she started showing interest in what I was eating. Baby’s first solids was an easy journey with her favourites being corn porridge and diced mango. You’d think she’d pay more attention to the better tasting first solids but nooo ! It had to be breastmilk as dessert.

A baby’s feeding time is controlled by you the mom; moving the nipple towards his upper lip to get a good latch etc. By the time baby was almost 6-10months, all I needed to do was to pop out the boob for her to grab hold and suck. What is it with baby’s movement when breastfeeding? Small enjoyment and their hands will be beating on your boobs to draw out more milk, standing on you whilst sucking, feet performing circus acrobatics in all directions! And the humming!! Hilarious!!

via GIPHY

I noticed after a while that, I was now a human pacifier. She would cry and scream only to suck playfully and then bite me occasionally and then laugh when I scream. 😒 But I am totally grateful that it’s my nipple and not a plastic pacifier that she prefers. And also she preferred the right boob for the slower flow which helps her to relax and sleep and the left boob for a stronger flow when she was hungry.

Because we can!.gif

I used to wonder if it was painful whenever I saw toddlers with teeth and still breastfeeding. Now I wonder no more. Woe unto you when baby sleeps on the boob and clamps her teeth unconsciously! Chaiiii!! That is some painful move!

Like a mama friend told me sometime, your nipples will never be the same 🤭. I honestly don’t know how to describe the landscape and shape of my nipples now 😜. My chest has veins stretched out in thin Iines towards my breast area. Whew! I’ve never been busty so I consider it a blessing to be able to still breastfeed with these small ‘oranges’. 😁

As at today, Essi looks up at me, raises her hands up and says ‘come’ which for me is a signal that she wants the fufor . Other times, she will say ‘brrest’ i.e. ‘breast’ when she has the feels. Having to hold a toddler to breastfeed is of course tiring but you don’t have to feed her for long, neither do you have to use both hands. You can scroll through your instagram feed whilst you feed 😄. A feed takes about 5 minutes on each breast before she goes off to search for something to destroy or rearrange.

How Society Is Handling My Extended Breastfeeding.

True story. I was at a funeral a month ago and I had Essi in my arms when she started clawing at my blouse to suckle. I’m sure she was overwhelmed by the number of unrecognisable sea of humans and needed to be in her ‘safe warm space’. As she suckled, a woman beside me looked at her and said, ‘shame! ohoo! shame’ and then she laughed. I didn’t say anything to her but I was confused. Is it because she sees Essi as ‘too old’ to be breastfeeding? I don’t remember where but someone also said the same thing when I was breastfeeding publicly at another location. This is tiring and a bit embarrassing. What is the beef if a child eats well and wants to have ‘sweet after meals’ ? It’s some way paa. Breast milk nutrition actually evolves over time as a baby grows providing the child with much needed nutrients even at toddler stage. What’s more some way is that it’s the women who shame me oh! Imagine!

via GIPHY

Sometimes this is how I want to react 🙈

Tell em Batman!.jpg

Benefits of Extended Breastfeeding

  1. You definitely lose more calories and post-baby fat but if only you aren’t overeating your Mom’s rice balls and groundnut soup.

  2. It helps to comfort and soothe baby when the teething storms arise. Teething is one wild and stressful ride and loss of appetite is a terrible symptom which affects baby and indirectly gives mom a a shadow of a mental breakdown. Give baby the boob as your breastmilk is enough for them until their appetite is back to normal which is within a day or two.

  3. It helps with your toddlers physical and mental development and protects them from all kinds of viral and bacterial infections. I can’t remember the last time Essi had a cold, illness or a weird skin rash. Immunity booster!

  4. Although it can be tiring especially after a very long day, it’s actually very comforting for me and a time of quiet bonding with her. I sing to her and also pray over her life whilst she suckles. Very soon I won’t have that anymore. Allow. 😝

  5. Breastfeeding also reduces my risk of breast cancer. I recently went for the breast cancer screening at StayWell Healthcare and I was in the clear 👍🏾🥳.

Challenges in Extended Breastfeeding.

  1. Any time I'm home, she eats less and wants more boob action. This is frustrating and tiring after a long day. To sometimes get around this, I buy fruit snacks to distract her.

  2. It's more physically draining on the body . Drinking more fluids and eating well helps to regain lost strength.

As Operation Stop Breastfeeding At 2 draws closer, I’m seriously thinking of ways to help my little one forget the boob. I have heard how some moms smear aloe vera, bitter leaf and even ground paracetamol on the nipples to discourage the toddler from sucking🤣. Maybe i’ll try that or leave her with my Mom for 3 days until she gets the message. Hmm.. I am not looking forward to it at all! What did you do to wean baby off breastmilk completely? Share your wisdom tips with me and other upcoming new Moms please!!!

Egg prices in Ghana escalate drastically due to shortage of maize & soybean chicken feed.

There's a severe shortage of maize and soybean feed in Ghana which has led to jacked up prices of existing feed sold by feed suppliers thus directly impacting the price of eggs.

The recent hike in price became more noticeable after more than 40% jump in price in less than two months. As a restaurant owner and chef, I was a bit alarmed when I bought a crate of eggs for 22 cedis and the size of eggs were like that of a 17cedis egg crate. The eggs were rather diminutive. After complaining to the egg vendor she bemoaned to me, “ it's not me oh! We aren't getting the eggs and the price they sell it to me has shot up.” I also noticed a sudden drop in Nkosua ne Meko sellers on the street. I was bewildered until I was slapped with GHC24 for a full egg crate before it hit me. The egg and pepper seller was also feeling the full price jet propulsion. There’s literally no 17cedis crate of eggs left.

After sharing my thoughts on this rather upsetting trend, several comments reveal that the cost of maize feed has shot up by almost 50%! Soybean feed has also doubled in price. Egg farmers are also finding it difficult to find feed to buy and when they do, it’s costly.

Does the recent avian flu in Europe have anything to do with the increase in feed prices? It most certainly seems to be a major root cause based on the communique issued by the Ministry of Agriculture banning all poultry and poultry products & feed from Europe.

EpRhNq9XUAEvOX_.jpeg

Or perhaps the torrential rainfall in the Northern parts of the country during the September & October months is also another contributory factor?

So my question is, are we not as a country able to provide sufficient & low-cost feed for the production of poultry in Ghana? Shouldn’t the government’s Planting For Food And Jobs program provide enough maize and soybean feed for poultry farmers in Ghana? My other question or musing is, ‘ why must the Ghanaian businessman/woman who is legit trying to run a business struggle with high costs of production?’

With the increment in egg prices due to the glaring shortage of chicken feed, will the cost of dressed broiler or layer also rise up? That must be a definite and resounding YES!! So what meat should Ghanaians this Christmas? There can’t be Christmas without chicken! Or can there be?

Here is a useful egg preserving tip if you want to store up for the Christmas;

  1. Crack open several eggs into a bowl and beat thoroughly. Pour beaten egg into an ice-cube tray and store in the freezer . Take out each cube whenever you need it, thaw and use.

9 Things I Did Which Helped My Baby To Speak Early.

$

When my little one was 10months old she said her first word “ Mama'“. I remember it so well like it was only yesterday. I was so stressed out with opening the restaurant, the potholes on the Nana Krom road and dealing with baby’s teething and low appetite. She was in her cot looking at me with my head in my hands. I was almost in tears when I heard her say “ Mama” . I looked up in wonder at her wide Disney looking eyes. She repeated it and I swear to you, all the tiredness and frustration melted away. I lifted her out and hugged her close. From that day, her speech developed at an incredible speed! Today at 20mo she can identify objects , ask for her immediate needs with such clarity in words.

How did I do it? Well, I hope these tips I share will prove useful for you if you are a new Mom and Dad . We definitely can’t rush your child’s natural development ( walking especially) but for her language skills there are things you can do to boost it.

  1. Start Early

How early? Literally from when your child is in the womb :-). I have lost count of the number of times I would chat with her during the 2nd and 3rd trimester until I popped. Don’t think your baby is too young to have a conversation with. Whenever I gave her bath, I would sing the alphabets and repeat the Alphabet phonics “ A for apple, B for ball, C for cat.” I did this every single day to when she was 10months. One day, I said “ A for…..” I waited for her response and she said “Appu” I screamed in delight! She sensed my excitement and laughed as well. What an experience it was! I taught her from A to D every bath and dressing up time. Thankfully, the nanny also understood the importance of early speech development. She would chat with Essi as though chatting with an adult. We both had conversations with her knowing that her brain was fast developing and building up to forming her own syllables. Too often I have seen parents shush their babbling babies because ‘they are making noise’. Please leave them to babble! It’s their attempt at communicating with you! Encourage don’t shush.

  2. Avoid baby talk.

It’s fun to do the ‘ goo goo gaa gaaa ‘ once in awhile whilst your baby is a newborn. I am a champion at that baby language. But it’s important to speak clearly and distinctly when teaching her objects around him/her and having conversations.. Avoid baby talk to name objects. For example, Say “ Do you want your bottle?” Instead of “ do you want your boo boo?” I also ask her everyday questions like, “ Are you hungry?” “ Is it nap time?” Today she says these phrases so well whenever the need arises. Whenever her Dad calls on FaceTime his first question to her is , “Did you sleep well? or How are you?” Even if your baby doesn’t respond just keep at it. This has helped her recognise the importance of this greeting that she repeats it whenever I get a call. Hilarious!

  3. Share What You’re Doing.

When she started crawling and turning my kitchen upside down, I would tell her what I was doing at that particular moment. “ I am cooking” I would often say when she looked up at me curiously. Today she asks me, ‘is it cooking?’ when she sees me at the stove. I would respond yes I’m cooking. Or I would tell her ‘ I am washing the dishes.’ She would then record the activity in her little brain for later use and amble off. Whenever we have to go out, I tell her where we are going like, “ we are going to the shop.” instead of silently bumbling her into the car seat. Now whenever she realises we are about to get into the car she asks, “ is it shop?” I say yes, we are going to the shop.

  4. Be responsive.

There will be days when your baby will walk or crawl up to with an object in hand, unless it’s something harmful don’t just snatch it away with a scolding. Tell him or her what the object is and what it does. Trust me, they save that information for the future, don’t be surprised when they come back saying the word to you. Be responsive instead of brushing them off. Your response is a form of encouragement and a confidence boost. My baby will say “ outside'“ when she wants to go for a stroll and my response is, “ Should we go for a stroll outside?” That way i’m responding and helping her string her words together.

5. Encourage others.

A lot of us grew up in households where we were told to ‘speak when spoken to’ and we grew up timid in such environments. Thanks to the internet and increase in knowledge we know the importance of encouraging a child to speak up and out. Encourage your family to also speak to your baby instead of shushing them up.

6. Read to baby early.

It’s never too early to start reading to your baby. Several bookshops like Vidya and Sytris stock exciting and colourful children’s books , grab several to read to baby during breastfeeding and when it’s bedtime. The sound of your voice and words will help baby’s speech develop faster. I discovered baby flashcards on Apple’s Books app and I started sharing with her early. It’s enthralling to see her identify the objects even before I read it out. The app has both free and paid digital books available.

7. Playdates

Covid-19 really put a damper on playdates. Many babies have missed out on playdates due to social distancing. But playdates are actually a great way for babies to interact with other little humans even though there’s not much conversation happening. You can talk to your LO to share a toy with her friend “ Sharing is caring!” This also helps develop their social skills.

8. Avoid too much screen time.

Dumping your baby in front of the television or an iPad isn’t the best way for speech development. Human interaction and your voice is the ideal way. Yes there’s lots of educational shows on TV and on YouTube kids but you don’t want a screen addicted child. There’s lots of challenges that comes with that. Strike a balance with screen time and time spent with Mummy and Daddy. Even when driving in the car, chat with your baby whilst they are alone in their car seat. Ask him if they see the cars or trees around. interaction is key. I once visited a family friend and I noticed her 4 year old speaking with a ‘slanging American’ accent. His Mom says all he watches is cartoons. This may seem funny but it’s true.

9. Educational Toys

Investing in educational & interactive toys is worth it, trust me. Most of these toys have colourful buttons which when pressed belts out sing-a-along songs and phrases. I bought this FisherPrice Laugh & Learn Puppy’s Remote from Marina mall way back when she was 4 months.

This laptop by Leap Frog is also powerful for teaching your toddler words and other phrases. When she presses a letter, the digital puppy says a word which she repeats back.

It’s not easy doing these on a daily affair but it’s highly rewarding to watch how your child develops in speech and mental abilities at an early stage. As a new parent, make the time to interact and engage with your child from an early age to help develop them mentally and emotionally. Don’t leave everything to tech and teachers. Before you know it, they are grown and not interested in spending time with you either. I hope you have picked up some useful tips here. Do share your own tips on how you encouraged your baby to start speaking early in the comments section.

COVID-19 testing free for refferals to public health COVID-19 testing laboratories.

Social media in Ghana today was awash with news after several media houses and blogs (mine included) published a communique which directed public health COVID-19 testing labs to not charge walk-ins for covid testing.

IMG_2916.jpeg

The excitement at this news was quashed after a press conference was held today 28th January by the ministry of Information.

The Ghana Health Services Director-General Dr Patrick Kumah-Aoagye corrected this communique during the press briefing and said: “it’s not a mass testing, you will not just walk to the place and expected to be tested without a referral letter.” Travellers to the country also have to pay to get their testing done.

This means without a referral, any walk-in will be charged appropriately for the test.

That ended quickly.

Sakumono Lagoon, A Ramsar Site is being destroyed whilst the government looks on.

I was watching a news coverage on CitiTV last week on residential properties encroaching on the Sakumono Lagoon wetlands and honestly it was horrifying to say the least. The Sakumono Lagoon is one of the Ramsar sites designated to be of international importance for migratory animals.

How are responsible authorities issuing building permits in lands that are supposed to be protected?? Are we serious as a country at all?? Do we understand the importance of wetlands?

Here's a brief definition of what a wetland is and why our energies must go into protecting them at all costs;

An encyclopedic entry defines a Wetland as an area of land that is either covered by water or saturated with water.

Wetlands exist in many kinds of climates, on every continent except Antarctica. They vary in size from isolated prairie potholes to huge salt marshes. They are found along coasts and inland. Some wetlands are flooded woodlands, full of trees. Others are more like flat, watery grasslands. Still others are choked by thick, spongy mosses. ( Source : National Geographic)

The importance of wetlands

  1. Dead plants and leaves break down in these wetlands waters to provide food for smaller aquatic insects, small fishes and shellfish which are then fed on by larger predatory fishes, mammals, birds and reptiles.

  2. Wetlands are crucial in moderating global climate conditions as they store carbon instead of releasing it to the atmosphere. Marshes & swamps are excellent examples of this.

  3. We source quite a number of fishes from our wetlands. Adwen ( mudfish), crabs and some varieties of shellfish are all derived from wetland soils.

  4. Wetlands acts like a natural sponge that traps and slowly release floodwaters into streams and other water bodies.

  5. It's a home for varying migratory birds which also feed on the small fishes and aquatic insects in the wetland waters and soil. These birds also breed and nest in the low shrubs of the wetlands.

Why would anyone want to build on such a land?? It's highly suitable for building properties as well. The land is deeply saturated with water which means you are basically exposing you and your household to flooding during the rainy season. By destroying our wetlands we are basically killing off migratory birds which can then become extinct in no time.

Although Ghana is a signatory under the Ramsar Convention, it seems not enough enforcement has been done to protect our wetlands. Have you seen any awareness on wetland protection on TV before? I haven't.

We must not remain silent about the encroaching of buildings and pollution of the Sakumono wetlands. Fishermen reliant on fishes from these wetlands have their source of income depleted due to pollution from human occupation of these lands. It's obvious that climate change is affecting us in Ghana as well and the continuous abuse & degradation of our land use will be a hefty price to pay in the future. Our ecological system is at risk!

The first thing which comes to mind when you hear of a Mexican restaurant is… Tacos. That’s it. Even before you remember tequila or enchiladas . The traditional Mexican street food has become a global phenomenon and Accra is having her moment as well with the launch of a Mexican restaurant; La Cocina Mexicana .
